02 — Biography
Ali Choupani Nejad is a contemporary flutist, sound designer and improviser. Born in Isfahan in 1995, he began his formal training at the Fine Arts Art School before moving to Tehran for his Bachelor and Master in flute performance at the University of Tehran and Art University of Tehran.
His practice sits between the Iranian conservatory tradition, free improvisation, extended techniques for the flute, and live electronics — a vocabulary he developed through years of premiere recordings with Iranian composers, sound design for theatre, animation and film, and a long collaboration with the Iran Flute Society as performer, founder of the Daman Flute Quartet, and event organizer.
He has performed as principal and second flute with orchestras in Tehran, Kashan and Artsakh (Armenia), recorded four albums, and premiered over eighteen new works for solo flute and ensemble. His sound design work has been presented at the Asian American International Film Festival (New York), the Tadjrobe Festival (Tehran), and a Kyoto University of Arts animation production.
Since 2024 he lives in Ghent, pursuing the Advanced Master in Contemporary Music at HoGent — KASK & Conservatorium, working with artists including Pak Yan Lau, Michelle Agnes Magalhaes, Sarah Wéry, Liisa Hirsch and the GAME ensemble across Belgium and beyond.

07 — Statement
The flute is a body — breath, bone, valve and circuit. I work where the Persian radif meets the unwritten page.
